Carbon capture mechanism
Weathering is the natural breakdown of rocks and minerals and nature has been doing this for millions if not billions of years.
Once the RevivaSoil is mixed into the soil, it reacts with carbon dioxide to form bicarbonate ions. Water dissolves the ions as it percolates through the soil and this is called “Enhanced Rock Weathering” and eventually flow into the oceans correcting its acidity. Here they remain safely sequestering the carbon.
At the same time, other ions such as calcium and magnesium are also released and taken up by plants as nutrients and balancing the soils’ acidity level. When a sufficient amount of calcium released, the soil will undergo a process called carbonation which uses a different mechanism to sequester carbon.
Newcastle University, UK has certified that Revivasoil Rock Dust will sequester:
- Some CO₂ via the Carbonation process and some via the “Enhanced Rock Weathering” process.
- A typical rock dust will sequester at least 120kg of CO₂ per 1 tonne of applied to the soil.
- Every site will be different and analysis is required and must be approved.
The timing of the sequestration process does depend on the soil type but most will be absorbed within 5 years.
